Orla Ni Dhubhghaill

Biography
Orla Ni Dhubhghaill served as director of the BSc(Chemistry) programme from 2023 to 2024. In addition, she was Fourth Year Chemistry Coordinator from 2015 to 2024, with particular responsibility for organisation of final year research projects. Previously, she was chair of the School teaching and learning committee (2012 - 2015) with overall responsibility for the B.Sc. (Chemistry)
degree including coordination of programme semesterisation; from 2007 - 2012, she was the Examinations Officer for the department. In
2011 – 2012, she served as chair of the departmental working group on
RSC (Royal Society of Chemistry) accreditation of our undergraduate degree
programmes; all of the degree programmes submitted were accredited. She acted as departmental/school liaison representative with the Disability Support
Service for over 20 years (2001-2024) reflecting her commitment to student welfare. Her research interests lie in
bioinorganic chemistry, in particular in the design and synthesis of
coordination complexes with potential biological activity. She has graduated seven Ph.D. students and three M.Sc. students.
Background: She obtained both B.Sc.(1st Hons) and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from U.C.C. Her doctoral research focussed on the synthesis and characterisation of metalloboranes. She then moved to the University of London (Birkbeck College) and the field of bioinorganic chemistry, working on metal-based anticancer agents in the group of Professor Peter J. Sadler. In 1993, she moved again, this time to the University of Lausanne as a postdoctoral research associate in Prof. Andre Merbach’s group where she worked on a project to investigate the relaxation properties of lanthanides used as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) contrast agents. In October 1994 she returned to UCC to a temporary lectureship in the Department of Chemistry, and was appointed to a permanent position in October 1996.

Research Interests
Research in Orla
Ni Dhubhghaill’s laboratory was in bioinorganic chemistry with particular
emphasis on the design and synthesis of coordination complexes with potential
biological activity.
Work in the group focussed on (i) design and synthesis of novel
hemi-labile ligands of the types P,N,O-, P,N,S-, or P,N,N-; (ii) development
of synthetic routes to Group 10 (Pd, Pt) and Group 11 (Cu, Ag) complexes of
these and (iii) investigations of the reactivity of the complexes with
biologically relevant ligands. In
addition, we prepared a series of novel cyclometallated Group 10 complexes including platinum(IV) complexes. Investigations on selected complexes indicated excellent DNA binding capacity as well as some cytotoxicity. Subsequent work further explored structure activity-relationships for these complexes.
