Biography

Currently I am the Paddy O'Keeffe Senior Lecturer (Associated Professor) in Plant Genetics in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at University College Cork. I joined UCC in 2018 after being a junior PI (Career track Fellow) at the Centre for Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) in Barcelona, Spain from 2012 to 2017. Previously to that I was a Research Associate at The Rockefeller University (2005-2012) in New York, USA, where I worked in the laboratory of Plant Molecular Biology led by Professor Nam-Hai Chua. Before this I was a postdoctoral fellow at the laboratory of Professor Laszlo Bogre at Royal Holloway College, University of London, UK. My PhD project was developed as a collaboration between the University of Lisbon and the Max-Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne, Germany.

Teaching Interests

I am interested in Plant Biology teaching with a specific focus on molecular mechanisms controlling growth and developmental responses. I also have an interest in specific biochemical processes such as photosynthesis, responses to specific stresses. My interests also include a strong practical component, that is I want to train students with relevant skill sets which can broaden their employability success.

Currently I coordinate the following modules:
PS3021 - Plant Science Practical Skills
EV4010 - Environmental Work Placement
BL4004 - Frontiers in Biology

I co-coordinate the BL4003 module (Biological Work Placement) with my colleague Dr Mark Jessop, I oversee all the Applied Plant Biology students' work placements.

I am also the coordinator of the MRes in Plant Biology (https://www.ucc.ie/en/bees/courses/masters/mresplant/).
