Biography

Having completed a BA in Marketing and Languages in WIT and a Certificate in Business Studies at the IAE, Montpellier, France, Mary gained three years industry experience before returning to UCC to complete a Higher Diploma in Psychology. Mary also completed a foundation course in Counselling Skills part time while completing the Higher Diploma. She is now pursuing a PhD in the School of Applied Psychology under the Digital Arts and Humanities Programme, which is funded under the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions Cycle 5. Her research involves an experience centered design inquiry in to the relationship of cared for and family caregiver in the context of dementia.

Research Interests

Mary's PhD explores the potential of digital design to support and understand the patient and family caregiver relationship in the context of dementia. This research was originally ignited by existing work on digital support for personhood in dementia, based on artefact-mediated reminiscence. This was then developed further by a desire to evaluate these experience - centered designs across the dementia trajectory. Also of pertinence was to understand the experience of when parent and child find themselves as patient and caregiver; a topic that has relevance and urgency in the field of psychology. What this research allows is an opportunity for design to be used as both a methodology and an outcome, in turn educating design approaches and practices in HCI and interaction design.

This research adopts an experience-centered design approach, where positivism is replaced with a collaborative inquiry into the lived, felt experience of dementia patients and their caregivers. This methodology gives a voice to participants but also addresses the researcher's own voice; recognizing that it is an integral part of the overall research project. There are many dialogues at play - participant, researcher and designer and therefore the project lends itself to be studied using a dialogical approach.

A methodology such as this requires a psychological knowledge but also ability for creativity and collaborative practices, something that is facilitated by the Digital Arts and Humanities; where collaboration, digital tools and digital methodologies are at its core.
