Biography

Dr Aisling Jennings (BSc, MB, BCh, BAO, MICGP, DME, DOWH, PhD) is a practicing GP and Senior Lecturer in the Dept. of General Practice in University College Cork. She has over ten years experience combining her clinical work as a GP with her role as an academic GP. 

Dr Jennings’ research interests include Palliative Care, Dementia and Deprescribing.She has >25 peer reviewed publications in Q1/2 journals. She has garnered €700,000 in peer-reviewed research funding. 

Dr Jennings completed her Medical Degree in UCC in 2009, graduating first in her class. She then completed her specialist GP Training in 2015. In 2019 she completed a mixed methods PhD on the management of Advanced Dementia. Her research garnered several research awards including the 2018 early career researcher award from the UK Society of Academic Primary Care. 

Within her role of senior lecturer Dr Jennings enjoys providing research supervision. She is currently supervising two PhD students and one clinical fellow in the department. She also provides research supervision to GP Registrars on the Cork Postgraduate Training Scheme. From March 2020 to November 2023 she was Assistant Director of the Cork Postgraduate GP Training Scheme.

Dr Jennings is module co-ordinator of the 3rd year Direct Entry Medical Students GP Module (CP3105) and the Graduate Entry 2nd year Medical Students GP Module (GM2105). She also contributes to teaching and assessment of Final Year Medical Students, Public Health BSc students and the Cert in Nurse Prescribing.

Dr Jennings contributes to several professional research, teaching and clinical bodies. She co-authored the National Clinical Guideline "Appropriate prescribing of psychotropic medication for non-cognitive symptoms in people with dementia" and the ICGP Quality in Practice Guide on Dementia. She is regional representative for the UK Society of Academic Primary Care. She is on the Executive Management Committee of the Health Research Board's Primary Care Clinical Trials Network of Ireland. She is on the Primary Palliative Care Steering Committee of the Irish Hospice Foundation. She is a member of the Quality and Safety in Practice (QSIP) of the Irish College of General Practitioners. She is a member of the Cork Research Ethics Committee (CREC). She is Associate Editor of the BMC Primary Care Journal.
