Research Profile
Biography
John Hough holds a BSc in Information Technology from NUI Galway, an MA in Postproduction with Sound Design from the University of York, and a Higher Diploma in Interaction Design from DCU. He is currently a Senior Technical Officer in the Department of Music at University College Cork, where he supports digital learning, media production, and research initiatives. John previously worked in the IT industry as a software developer before moving into higher education.
Johns research interests focus on interaction design and the role of AI in education, particularly in relation to trust, user experience, and the adoption of generative AI tools for academic research and teaching. He also maintains an active interest in sound studies, especially the use of ambient sound design in film, which formed the focus of his earlier creative and academic work.
He is a Co-Investigator on the SHOCC project (Sonic Histories of Cork City), a public musicology and digital humanities initiative exploring place, memory, and sound through collaborative research and interactive mapping. He also played a key role in the ATU MakerSpace project, which supported both student innovation and STE(A)M outreach through the development of a network of creative fabrication labs. As part of this work, he developed training materials, service flows, and digital badging pathways to facilitate inclusive, hands-on learning experiences.
In parallel, John led the rollout of a network of self-service professional recording studios across ATU campuses, enabling lean, high-quality content creation by empowering academic staff to independently produce teaching materials.
From 20112017, John was a producer for Balcony TV Cork, and he remains a content producer for the IndieCork Film Festival. He has contributed to numerous short films and interdisciplinary arts projects, including:
