Biography

Dr Orla Lynch is the Dean of Doctoral Studies at UCC. Orla's academic appointment is as a Senior Lecturer in Criminology. She is the Programme Director of the PhD for Higher Education Professionals and the Ma in Trauma Studies. Until 2015 she was Director of Teaching and a Lecturer in Terrorism Studies at CSTPV at the University of St Andrews. Orla’s background is in International Security Studies and Applied Psychology; her primary training is as a social psychologist. She studied at both the University of St Andrews (MLitt) and University College Cork (Phd). Orla is a fellow with Hedayah, Abu Dhabi and a Board member of RAN, Europe. She is also a RESOLVE Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace, an Anniversary Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence and an Academic Advisor for WAVE Trauma Centre Belfast. Orla’s current research focuses on victimisation and political violence in relation to the direct victims of violence, but also the broader psycho-social impact of victimisation and the perpetrator-victim complex.   Orla has also examined the notion of suspect communities in relation to the impact of counter terrorism measures on Muslim youth communities.  Orla's research interests lie in individual and group desistance from political violence, including issues related to deradicalisation, the role of grand narratives in justifying involvement in violence and psychosocial understandings of the transitions from violence to peace. Her recent books include The Disappeared with Sandra Peake, Applying Psychology and The Case of Terrorism and Political Violence with Carmel Joyce.

Research Interests

I have spent the past 18 years as a S/lecturer, first at the University of St Andrews, and then at UCC. In 2023, I was appointed as the first Dean of Doctoral Studies in UCC, a senior leadership role with responsibility for the transformation of Doctoral Education. I am also an SL in Criminology (50% FTE). I began my academic career with a PhD in Applied Psychology, and I have been concerned with the application of psychology, victimology and criminological psychology to social issues ever since. This has involved the application of existing psychological frameworks in novel ways to significant social problems and the enhancement of those theories and frameworks in order to improve our understanding of and responses to these issues. A particular focus of my research revolves around how knowledge is used by practitioners in their work. Underpinning this approach is the understanding that the production of usable knowledge cannot be an academic venture in isolation and the co- design/production of research with key stakeholders is essential. The key thread connecting the variety of empirical work I undertake is a focus on extreme events and extreme behaviour. As a research leader, I am widely recognised as a national and international expert on extremism and terrorism. I have led multiple projects focusing on state responses to extremism and I have produced working papers, training manuals and case studies for statutory agencies and transnational bodies including most recently the IOM, UN, the European Commission, and the COE. In addition, in the past five years, I have produced 6 authored books and one edited book and 16 chapters/papers. In recognition of my research leadership, I am routinely called on to consult on issue of extremism and have travelled to, amongst others, Canada, Tajikistan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Japan to consult with national and regional agencies on issues such as the return of foreign fighters and de-radicalisation programmes. At the European level I am a board member of RAN (EU Commission), a member of the Council of Europe Committee of Experts on Hate Crime; Internationally I am a senior fellow with Hedayah and the United States Institute of Peace. I have also had a number of commissions from the UN, the EU and other agencies and most recently my work has been funded by the EC, Hedayah, The RAN network, The FCDO UK, IRC, EI and the Dept. of Foreign Affairs. To date my research funding exceeds 1,950,000 euros.
