Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Criminology and I teach and supervise across both disciplines and their associated undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

I joined the Department in 2016 (when it was the Department of Sociology), having previously worked as a lecturer in Equality Studies at the School of Social Justice, University College Dublin and in Sociology at Maynooth University. My areas of expertise are gender, violence and conflict, feminism and social movements, precarity and precarious work in higher education.

I teach in the areas of feminism, sexuality, gender, research methods, conflict, gender and global insecurity.

As a feminist sociologist I have a firm commitment to feminist praxis and public sociology which reflects in both my scholarship and teaching. My work is informed by rich experiences of engagement and activism with groups organising in areas such as reproductive justice, housing, workers' rights, international feminist solidarity campaigns.

I convene the Sociology of Harm, Violence and Social Control study group under the auspices of the Sociological Associate of Ireland with my colleagues, Dr. Katharina Swirak and Andy Bray.

I hold a PhD in Political Studies from Queen's University (Kingston), an MA from Acadia University and a B.A.H. from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Research Interests

My research interests lie in the following areas:
-feminist organising, protest and social movements
-sociology of inequality
-precarity, work, and social inequalities
-gender, conflict and political violence.
-identity in conflict zones

I am currently a Co-PI on two research projects:

1) 'The Precarity Penalty' with Dr Aline Courtois, Bath.
The study is concerned with long-term precarious work in Irish higher education institutions and its impact on everyday life, career and well-being. We understand precarious work as work that is insecure, unpredictable, paid poorly relative to equivalent secure work, and that typically does not advance workers’ careers. We are particularly interested in documenting the experiences of those who have experienced employment precarity for five years or more.

2) Women of the Borderlands: A Walking Biographical Study of Women’s Everyday Life on the UK/Irish Border (WoBLa) , with Dr Niall Gilmartin, University of Ulster
This project is funded by the HEA North-South Research programme and it adopts a ‘Walking Interview as a Biographical Method (WIBM) approach to explore women’s relationship with the border during the Troubles and since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. https://www.ucc.ie/en/cacsss/research/researchnewsarchive/womenoftheborderlands/

I am also a member of the Gender and Academic Precarity  Working Group of the European Universities – Critical Futures Project. https://projects.au.dk/european-universities-critical-futures/
