GeneralContext Cross shaft fragment.
Dimensions 125cm high and 31.5cm tapering to 21cm.
GeneralDescription Cross shaft fragment with a figure and vine-scroll, dated to the eighth century.
GeneralDescription The figure takes up almost half of the shaft. He is holding a heavy plant branch above his head in his right hand. The whole panel is surrounded by a frame of segmented columns surmounted by stepped slab capitals. The branch passes through the frame at the top. The figure's left arm is held tightly against his body and he is holding an object in his hand. This object has been described as a musical instrument, a hammer or a long-necked bottle. It is suggested that the figure is dancing. The branch that he is holding has round berry bunches at the top.
