GeneralContext Cross slab.
Location Durham Cathedral.
Dimensions 96cm (37.75'') long, 65.3cm (25.75'') wide, and 10.2cm (4'') thick.
GeneralContext Stone type: yellow sandstone.
GeneralDescription Cross slab, possibly a grave-cover, dated to early eleventh century.
GeneralDescription This possible grave-cover has a deeply carved cross that extends for the full length and width of the slab. It is surrounded by a roll moulding. In the centre of the cross there is a circle containing a small relief cross.
GeneralDescription On the left horizontal arm there is a motif attached to a small block-like feature. This could be an animal with its feet touching a block or possibly a form of plant-scroll, with the block-like feature as a root.
GeneralDescription On the right horizontal arm there is a four-legged creature with an unidentifiable head, and a pellet before its jaws. Below its feet there is a small cross.
GeneralDescription On the lower arm there is a figure that has been partly cut away. It has a round head and what look like wings.
GeneralDescription The shaft of the cross is narrower than the head, and was surrounded by a wide flat-band moulding. There is a figure on what remains of the shaft. This figure appears to have a heavy halo and is possibly winged.
